North Riverfront Trail Birdhouse Project,

A project done under a grant from Great Rivers Greenway

I did this project to establish a bird trail, a group of birdhouses spaced along the North Riverfront Trail in order to attract birds to this area by providing them with habitat.

I made a mold, from which I made eleven stoneware birdhouses with backplates for the levee wall at the foot of the trail. We marked a location for each birdhouse, then applied construction adhesive to both the wall and the birdhouse backplates and pressed the backplates onto the wall. We mortared around the backplates to prevent water seepage,

then hung the birdhouses in place.

Birds used them for about a year.

However, sad to say, these birdhouses have all been destroyed or stolen by vandals.

However, I still have the molds, and hope some day to replace them

with identical, but more durable, new birdhouses.
